3 Common Dental Implant Issues & How to Fix Them

Dentist Blog

Dental implants are resilient, long term, alternative solutions to using dentures. However, like any medical procedure, there are some issues that could arise during, or some time after, the implant procedure. Check out http://elmafamilydental.com for more information, and read on to learn about some of these issues and how to deal with them.

Loose Implants

There are a few different reasons why your implants might become loose. A problem might arise during the osseointegration process. This process refers to the way that the implants will successfully connect or adhere to your jawbone. It might be the case that your body simply rejects the implants altogether, and the osseointegration process fails. This will cause your implants to feel quite loose before falling out of your mouth, altogether. Oftentimes, the presence of an preponderance of bacteria is the cause for this situation.

If your implants become loose, they must be removed and then properly reinstalled. To avoid this problem, make sure you get control of any contraindications beforehand (e.g. smoking, unchecked diabetes, etc.), since some people are more at risk for loose implants than others. Also, you can avoid this issue by having the dentist insert a bone graft into your jaw. Osseointegration will be able to occur more easily with a graft.

Nerve Damage

During the implant process, there is a small chance in which you could receive either nerve or tissue damage. This occurs when the implants are placed in the jaw in such a way that they are far too close or rub directly against the nerves in your jaw. This can cause many problems for you and your jaw, namely that it can make conditions such that you completely lose sensation in your jaw. If this occurs, talk with your dentist so that you both can monitor it. According to nature.com, the good news is that about 90% of alveolar nerve issues resolve within 8 to 10 weeks. If you feel tingling around the jaw, that may mean that the nerves are working to repair themselves. In worse-case scenarios, the implants must be removed as soon as possible.

Small Sinuses

Sinus problems may require that you have some post-op treatment or even a few additional sinus surgeries that will help to enlarge your sinus cavity. This issue occurs when people have a very small sinus cavity located above their upper jaw. Dental surgeons require a wide, open sinus space for a dental implant surgery, due to the delicacy of the operation. As such, a widening of the sinus passages becomes a necessity for those individuals with a small cavity.

Dental implants can be a great alternative to both your actual teeth and dentures. However, just as with any surgical procedure, there are some concerns of which you should be aware of. Hopefully, this brief article has given you some insight into some contingencies that can affect your implants.

The Reasons Why You Should Get A Root Canal

Hi, my name is Kevin Nelson and I want to tell you about my experience. I had a painful tooth so I went to see my dentist. After the examination, he said that I needed to have a root canal to save the tooth. I told the dentist to just pull the tooth instead and then he explained why that wasn't a good idea. He said that pulling the tooth would cause additional problems and then he told me what could happen. I didn't want any more problems, so the dentist did the root canal and I'm glad that he did. I wanted to write a blog to tell others about the benefits of a root canal and what to expect during the procedure. I hope that by getting the word out, other people won't make the same mistake that I almost did by getting a perfectly good tooth pulled.
