The Simple Smile Solution: The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Porcelain Veneers

Dentist Blog

With the modern advances in cosmetic dentistry, you can walk into an office with teeth that you are ashamed to show and walk out with pearly whites you are more than proud to share. One of the ways that this is accomplished is through the use of porcelain veneers. While porcelain veneers may be one of the most popular treatment options when it comes to cosmetic dentistry, this does not come without some disadvantages. The only way to obtain a smile that truly makes you happy is by weighing the pros and cons involved right from the initial consultation.

Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

One of the greatest advantages of porcelain veneers is that a new smile can be achieved in just a few short visits. The surface of your natural teeth will be prepared for the application of a thin porcelain cover that is shaped and created to give you an attractive smile. This creates a great advantage for people who are unhappy with the size, shape, or color of the teeth that they already have. Once applied, porcelain veneers do not require a lot of upkeep or further dentist visits. They are easy to take care of with regular brushing and flossing, resistant to stains, and very durable. Modern porcelain veneers can last as long as thirty years with the appropriate care.

Disadvantages of Porcelain Veneers

There is a short period of time after getting veneers that the wearer will have to adjust to the difference in their mouth. The teeth may be a different size and shape, which can cause a slight difference in speech temporarily. Depending on how much surface of the original teeth is removed during preparation for applying veneers, there may be some sensitivity involved in the first few weeks as well. This does usually subside after a short time, but may need to be addressed by a cosmetic dentist if the problem persists. Porcelain veneers can break and crack if you are not careful. It is imperative that you use caution while eating to prevent teeth from tapping together with force. Furthermore, if you are prone to teeth grinding while you sleep, it may be necessary to wear a dental guard when you go to bed.

Even though dental veneers provide one of the simplest solutions for people who want a prettier smile, they do have some disadvantages. The disadvantages associated are mild, however, and often prove to be worth having a gorgeous smile. Talk to a cosmetic dentist (such as one from Trussville Dentistry) if you are considering porcelain veneers.

The Reasons Why You Should Get A Root Canal

Hi, my name is Kevin Nelson and I want to tell you about my experience. I had a painful tooth so I went to see my dentist. After the examination, he said that I needed to have a root canal to save the tooth. I told the dentist to just pull the tooth instead and then he explained why that wasn't a good idea. He said that pulling the tooth would cause additional problems and then he told me what could happen. I didn't want any more problems, so the dentist did the root canal and I'm glad that he did. I wanted to write a blog to tell others about the benefits of a root canal and what to expect during the procedure. I hope that by getting the word out, other people won't make the same mistake that I almost did by getting a perfectly good tooth pulled.
